Community Health (Chap 2) Quasi-Governmental Agencies

Your assignment is to research at least six ‘quasi governmental health agencies, and discuss the purpose / function / role for each. Please have at least two sentences for each agency.
Quasi-governmental Health Organizations

A. Quasi-governmental health agencies receive funding from both public and private sources, and carry out functions expected of government agencies without government supervision.

B. The American Red Cross is the best-known example of a quasi-governmental health organization.

C. There are similar agencies in many foreign countries.

D. Other quasi-government organizations:

1. National Science Foundation

2. National Academy of Sciences

IV. Nongovernmental Health Agencies

A. Nongovernmental health agencies are funded by private contributions and grants and are not headed by government officials.

B. Voluntary health agencies are health organizations that were started by concerned citizens who saw a community health need not being met by any government agency.

1. Voluntary health organizations often have national, state, and local offices.

2. Among the best known are the American Cancer Society, the American Health Association, and the American Lung Association.

3. Voluntary health agencies usually operate under a voluntary board of directors who hire a paid executive director, who in turn directs a paid staff and a group of volunteers.

4. The purposes of most voluntary health agencies are to raise money for research, educate the public, and provide services to those in need, and advocate for their cause.

C. Professional health organizations/associations are funded by membership dues and serve to protect and promote the standards of the profession. Examples include the American Medical Association and the American Nursing Association.

D. Philanthropic foundations provide money for projects and research to benefit society, much of it directed toward improving health. Examples are the Rockefeller Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Sloan-Kettering Foundation, and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

E. Service organizations, such as the Shriners, Kiwanis, and Lion’s clubs, and religious groups often contribute significant health services to the community.

F. Corporations affect the community’s health through health and benefits packages, health and safety education programs, and worksite fitness and recreation programs.

    Red Cross-It is the nations emergency response organization. They offer community service, like blood drives, and educational services.
    American Cancer Society-They provide support for cancer patients, families etc. They hold programs to help prevent and treat cancer patients.
    Shriners-They work to save lives through promoting lung health. They do this through education, advocacy and research.
    National Science Foundation-They help promote the progress of science. They fund 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America’s colleges and universities.
    Rockefeller Foundation-They help promote the well-being of humanity. They strengthen resilience to social, economic, health and environmental challenges.
    Kiwanis-They focus on the needs of ordinary people and children to create extraordinary life-changing moments. They build leaders through service oppurtunities.

    The red cross contribute by bringing aid to countries in need. Also they put much effort into finding cures for diseaes . National science protect and promote the health of animals and human beings.the national academy of science researchs scientfic projects.

    1.The national science foundation- Show all the recent discoveries there have been. It is a way for people that are interested in science to learn about all the advantages science has.
    2.American lung Association- This website tells people what is or isn’t healthy for their lungs. It helps people live longer lives by telling them what is good and bad for them.
    3.The American Red Cross-helps people that are in need. It also gets people to donate blood for those who need it.
    4.Robert wood Johnson foundations- tries to help Americans to get or better their health care. Tries to help children have a healthy future
    5.The rockefellar foundation-helps people who are struggling in today’s economy. helps people and children who are suffering in today’s economic crisis.
    6.The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is trying to bringing innovations in health and learning to the global community.

    1. American Red Cross- The American Red Cross is an emergency response agency. Also, the American Red Cross is the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States.
    2. National Academy of Sciences- Brings together committees of experts in all areas of scientific and technological endeavor. Experts serve for the good of their communities, without compensation to address critical national issues and give advice to the federal government and the public.
    3. The Sloan-Kettering Foundation- One of the world’s premier cancer centers, committed to exceptional patient care, leading-edge research, and superb educational programs. Provide patients with the best care available today as they work to discover more effective strategies to prevent, control, and ultimately cure cancer in the future.
    4. American Cancer Society- Dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. Also, concentrates on capacity building in developing cancer societies and on collaboration with other cancer-related organizations throughout the world in carrying out shared strategic directions.
    5. Lion’s Club- Their purpose is to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding. They are currently doing humanitarian projects all around the world, helping children and adults where it is needed most.
    6. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation- Their purpose is to improve the health and health care of all Americans. They use their funds all for the publics’ interest.

    American Red Cross-From CPR, first aid and automated external defibrillator (AED) training to injury prevention courses, bloodborne pathogens training and community disaster are learned. They also draw blood, help people in disasterous times, and raise money for things.
    American Lung Association- Whether it’s searching for cures, keeping kids off tobacco or fighting for laws that protect the air we all breathe, the work of the American Lung Association helps to save lives every day. They help in finding out what is health and not healthy for the lungs.
    American Cancer Society-Tries to eliminate cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and try to take the suffering out of cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. Also, concentrates developing cancer societies with other cancer-related organizations throughout the world in carrying out shared strategic directions.

    American Red Cross- helps prepare communities for emergencies and keep people safe every day thanks to caring people who support our work. Along with helping out with natural and unnatural disasters, finding homes for the unfortunate, and feeding the poor.
    National Science Foundation- is an independent US government agency responsible for promoting science and engineering through research programs and education projects. unding scource of many Federally give support to science colleges.
    National Academy of Science- The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is an honorific society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the general welfare.
    American CAncer Society- is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer and saving lives. This society is there to give cancer patients hope for life.
    American Lung Association- is working to strengthen laws and policies that protect everyone from secondhand smoke and prevent young people from starting. They also try and aid asthma patients in controlling their problem.
    Lion’s Club- is there to help with disaster relief. Also to help kids with sad and disabled lives.

    Red Cross- an emergency response system that helps and prepares communities in a certain area. Gives blood donations.
    American Lung Association- protects people from second hand smoke and teaches people how to prevent lung diseases.
    American Cancer Society- helps prevent cancer by teaching people the side effects and helping people cope with it.

    American Red Cross- humanitarian cause, not just in America but all over world/ blood collection, disaster relief, aid to soldiers and victims of war, and community education and outreach.
    National Science Foundation- supports fundamental research and education in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering.
    National Academy Of Sciences-an honorific society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the general welfare. investigate, examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art.
    American Cancer Society- nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.
    American Lung Association- strengthen laws and policies that protect everyone from secondhand smoke and prevent young people from starting. Also committed to helping smokers.
